Being Here

Most of my life, I have been told to act a certain way, do certain things, be someplace I am not sure I want to be in. But I am finally where I want to be, writing. Writing has always been my passion. True, I am a science geek and I love Math more than the average person, but it has always been writing that I have been passionate about. It is the thing that I have always wanted to do. As a kid, I realized that writing my thoughts can affect people, can change things. Yes, I had a messianic complex thing going on. Feeling ko magbabago ang world pag naging manunulat ako. (I felt like the world was gonna change if I become a writer.) But being who I was and wanting to please, I took a different path, one that was well within my skills and capabilities, but obviously one that I wasn't really very much passionate about. But things happened. A complex web of stories of because of this and because of that, from being a webmaster wannabe to professional blogger to gamer to poker enthusiast. All these things contributed to my finally being a writer,…

My PBA 2008 Thank You Speech

Last year, I was nominated for several categories, but wasn't even a finalist in any. I told myself, I'd be a finalist this year. And quickly forgot about that goal. But lo and behold, this year, three of my blogs were finalists for various categories. One blog which I am part owner of was also a finalist, and was, in fact, up against my other blog. Six of my posts were also finalists. I submitted entries for two sponsor awards. That give me around 12 chances to win. But I didn't win. NADA! Nonetheless, I would like to thank the following people: my cousins Kuya Andrew who helped me get started in blogging, and who continues to help me with the technical stuff, and Gwing who has taken over one of my blogs; Ate Aileen who inspires me to be a better blogger and person; Tita Janette who gave me the chance to be an iBlog speaker; MLQ3 and the Filipino Voices bloggers who inspire me to be a more responsible and conscientious political blogger Avatar Media colleagues Migs, Winston, and Blogie; all my blog readers, friends, mga ka-link exchange, fans, followers, flamers, and HATERS who give me a good…

It's An Honor, Thank You!

{I might be busy this weekend so I am posting this early.} Two of my blogs are now finalists for the Philippine Blog Awards 2008. My DotAStrategy Blog is a finalist in the Hobby and Recreation category. And Chikadora, despite what critics say, is a finalist in the Entertainment category. I have browsed through some of the other contenders and I am proud to be one of them, and even prouder that somebody considered my blogs worthy of their time by nominating it. Moreover, this blog, Life with Ria is eligible to be a finalist and maybe win (but I am not counting on it) in the Personal category. I have two other blogs that were nominated, but I am not expecting any more than I have already received. I am happy to have at least one blog being a finalist. Being nominated is an achievement in itself. A nomination, IMHO, means there is at least one person out there happy with the work I have done, and that to me is already an achievement. So thank you! Congratulations to all the other nominees and finalists! And an extra special congratulations to the winners, whoever they are! Congratulations also to…

My WordCamp Philippines 2008 Story

There used to be a time when Kuya Andrew would rant about how jealous he is of WordCamps elsewhere. And I would reply with a "WHAT'S A WORDCAMP?!" There was also a time I didn't what WordPress is, or that there were even WordPress.com blogs. And also a time when I didn't even know the difference between Matt Mullenweg and that other famous Matt internet person guy. To me, blogging was all about writing, researching, photos, linking... all the more geeky stuff, I went to Kuya Andrew to fix. Fast forward to 2007. Blogie became friends (sort of) with Matt M. for a Mindanao Bloggers Summit 2007 (MBS1) thing. Because of the friendship, and the huge success we had with MBS1, Blogie thought of the idea of organizing a WordCamp for Davao or Mindanao. Further inspired by our successful trip to Manila for iBlog 4, Blogie decided to rally the troops and convince me, Kuya Andrew, Migs, and Winston to make WordCamp Philippines happen. The pressure to move the venue to Metro Manila was surmounting and we just had to give in. Consultations with other bloggers via IM, Plurk, our blogs, and other means, helped us create, organize, and run…

Hectic Schedule is Hectic

Yes indeed. I haven't been blogging much because work, work, and boylets poker have made my life hectic and busy. First off, WordCamp is FAST APPROACHING! GRAWRRR! As logistics girl, I am in charge of the venue, physical arrangement, materials and supplies, kits, badges, food, booths, and many other things that I do not want to think off right now. Then, there's one wedding this September, one on October, three on December, and two on January. Wish me luck! (Plus, my batchmates are pressuring me to organize the batch reunion yet again.) I was also kinda helping out my cousin with his event. And this weekend is Kadayawan weekend, and several digital photographers and blogger from other parts of the country are coming over. On top of that, I have tons of blogging backlog: AutoRevolution and Drifting experience, Davao Food Trips, Museo Dabawenyo feature, N95 reviews, and tons of other stuff. The only thing keeping me insane these days are DotA which I rarely get to play, movies, and poker nights. Poker nights have been fun and relaxing in many different ways. Secret muna bakit. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! So far, I haven't been losing money, and I have won a couple of…

I am a Registered WordCamp Participant

I'm an organizer but even if I weren't I'd be very excited to attend this event. I have at least 9 WordPress blogs, 7 are self-hosted. Even though I've been blogging for quite some time, I still don't know a lot about coding, programming, and maintenance. I have also been giving blogging seminars and workshops. So it is imperative that I attend WordCamp Philippines to learn new tricks and tips, right? Plus, I'd get to meet new people, bloggers, designers, developers, plus MATT MULLENWEG!!!
