Found Story: Bing Lao's Scriptwriting Workshop

For a film enthusiast with not-so-secret dreams of being a film actress or filmmaker, it is quite exasperating that there are very few local film workshops. I was ecstatic to be informed that award-winning scriptwriter and mentor to rising scripwriters, Armando "Bing" Lao, is coming to Davao City. Among Lao's former students are Jade Castro, Jim Libiran, and Mark Meily. Among Lao's works are Tuhog, La Vida Rosa, Bridal Shower, and Bikini Open, and the classic Saan Nagtago ang Pag-ibig? The last one, being one of my favorite Filipino films, even if I watched it when I was very young. According to Monchito Nocon, Workshop Tour Coordinator, through the workshop, Lao "will expound on what he calls the 'found story code,' a scriptwriting process that Bing says best tells the story of the Filipino reality for it is derived from objects or phenomena found in real life. The different modalities under this code is the real-time mode, dramatic time, poetic time. Bing Lao's Found Story Workshop is part of the ufo Workshop Regional Summer Tours. It will be held from April 12 - 16, 2010 here in Davao City. The workshop fee is PhP5,000. Yes, I am very much excited…

Tri-people Artwork on display at Museo Dabawenyo in Davao City Mindanao Philippines

This is Mindanao

During a visit to Museo Dabawenyo last year, this piece of art caught my attention. It's a multimedia work by a local artist portraying the three major groups living in Davao City, also representative of the people of Mindanao: the Muslims, the Christians, and the lumads or indigenous peoples. The artwork highlights the differences in beliefs, culture, and lifestyle of the three groups. It is the aspiration of every Davaeoño, every Mindanaoan that these three groups will live in peace together, cooperating to uplift and develop our land of promise... Mindanao. This is Mindanao, a melting pot of cultures, of peoples from different places, of different beliefs, of various lifestyles. It is our hope that we will, together, fulfill the promise, enrich our people, uplift the lives of our fellow Mindanaoans, and cultivate our islands riches. With each other's strengths, respecting and accepting our differences and living with each other harmoniously, we will live the dream, fulfill the promise. Padayon Mindanao! #Mindanao :)

Frantic Night

Yesterday afternoon, we received word that my maternal cousin Mark needs blood donations in case he needs a blood transfusion since he has dengue fever. He has a O+ blood type which is a universal donor, but cannot receive other blood types. My relatives exhausted all means possible, including contacting our family friends who are somehow working for Red Cross Davao. Luckily, we were able to acquire enough units for him. In the evening, we became more panicked because the platelet count of his dad, Tito Jing who also has dengue fever, dropped significantly. Thing is Red Cross Davao is NOT OPEN 24 hours and there are no stocks of O+ Platelet Concentrate anywhere in Davao City. My cousin, a doctor, called all hospitals in the city to ask if they have any. One the Davao Regional Hospital/Davao Medical Center had one. We needed eight more units. We even called up Tagum (a nearby city) hospitals to check if they have any. They didn't. We called up all our relatives and friends in the medical profession. We felt so helpless. We are a big family, and people often joke us that we're related to everybody in Davao City. And we…

Friendship Kayak

Last night, I received a message from Ate Jojie Alcantara inviting us bloggers to the press conference for Friendship Kayak. Kuya Andrew, Chattee, and I were a bit late when we arrived at the event shortly after 11 this morning. But we didn't miss a lot. The three paddlers, Singaporean motivational speaker and accomplished adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow, Visayan Buzzy Budlong, Dabawenyo Arnel Gabutero and their support boat staff have just arrived at the shore of the Pearl Farm Marina. After a brief lunch, we gathered for the press con. Expedition Manager Toby Martin kicked things off by explaining what the Friendship Kayak is. Last year, while visiting the Philippines for a talk, Swee Chiow, having climbed the seven summits in one year and holding two Guiness Book of World Records titles, was inspired to have another great adventure. Fascinated by the Philippines' 7,107 islands, Swee Chiow proposed the idea of kayaking through the archipelago. Through various circumstances, Swee Chiow teamed with Toby, and fellow paddlers Buzzy and Arnel and planned to kayak through the archipelago from August to November 2009, coinciding with the 40 years of friendship between the Philippines and Singapore. Also going on board for the adventure…
