Anti-Valentines Movie Marathon Playlist

I was mulling making several anti-Valentine's posts. The first of which is a playlist of sorta angry and bitter movies for the single ladies (and gentlemen). I listed down movies. Drafted several other movie playlists and I ended up with this: my Anti-Valentines Movie Marathon Playlist. Not necessarily for single ladies. Definitely not just for the sad and bitter. But for anybody who simply wants to enjoy a good movie marathon. I have watched most of these more than once in the past. And majority of these I have re-watched in the past few weeks just to be sure these movies fit into what I consider as "Anti-Valentines Movies." What is an Anti-Valentines Movie Marathon? Most of these are my favorites. Other than me loving each one, I carefully chose every movie to make sure it fits my anti-Valentine's sentiments. First, most of the movies in my list are female-driven or have female leads. Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth I (1993)Screengrab from Hollywood Reporter: LINK Second, these films do not have romance or romantic relationships as a major plot point. Mind you, the leads are not necessarily loveless or single . Just that their love relationships are not at the center…

Dear Love

05/16/2019, past 4 am Dear Love, You know how some movies take you to a time and place? I am now watching "He's Just Not That Into You." And it took me back to when I first watched this movie. Back then, I was in love with this guy. I thought he was my one great love. To me, back then, he was perfect. Smart. Hard-working. And not bad looking. He was quite charming. I thought he loved me. Maybe he did... but not as much as he loved other things. When I watched HJNIY, it brought to light a lot of things. When you're in love or heartbroken, everything means something. You relate to everything. So this movie, it made me think and realize that what we had, whatever it was, was not worth the pain and heartache. We do not all have that one great love that's epic and tragic but end up happy. Most of us, we fall in love quietly... without much fanfare and no drama. It might seem boring and ho-hum but most relationships are like that. Boring. Not worth being written about or watching. But it does not mean those are less magical than…

Entering Jurassic Park

A few days ago, I posted this on my Ria Jose Facebook Page: I created the post in celebration of #ScienceFictionDay. But it also gave me soooo many memories. As far as I can remember, Jurassic Park was the film that piqued my interest in the sci-fi genre. First Cinema Experience Interestingly, my first memory of watching a film in the cinema was another sci-fi film. All I remember was it was a King Kong film and the first scene I remember was King Kong in a some sort of hospital bed or operating table. Via Google Search, I recently found out that this movie was "King Kong Lives." King Kong Lives Movie Poster According to Wikipedia, it was released in 1986. I was around 4 years old in 1986 but I am not too sure if the film was released in our city on the same year or if my memory is accurate. I did enjoy that movie and many other sci-fi movies like ET, Batteries Not Included, Back to the Future, and even Robocop. But I was not particularly attached or fascinated by these films. Entering Jurassic Park Sometime in the early 1990s, I saw the trailer for…

Oro by Alvin Yapan [MMFF 2016]

I'm not a movie reviewer but I think it would be a great disservice to everybody if I don't promote this film. I went inside the cinema with high expectations. After all, Sir Alvin Yapan is one of my most favorite professors of all time. And for the first time, one of his films is showing in local cinemas. So yey! Oro, Dugo ang Kinang ng Ginto Kahit na sobrang taas ng expectations ko, I was blown away and greatly overwhelmed by Oro. Ang ganda ng storya. Thought-provoking and cringe-inducing siya. At sa totoo lang gusto ko talaga ihagis yung phone ko sa silver screen. Nakakalungkot at nakakagalit. Ang bigat ng pakiramdam habang nanonood ako at kapag naaalala ko yung pelikula. At lalo akong naiinis kapag naalala kong based on true events ang kwento. 😭 Ang galing ng actors. Iba! They deserve the Best Ensemble Award. At siyempre, Irma Adlawan IS Irma Adlawan. Subtle pero powerful. Sobrang saludo ako kay Kapitana, both the character and the real life Kapitana. Mabuhay kayo! Irma Adlawan as Kapitana in Oro Gustong-gusto ko rin sila Joem Bascon (bukod sa crush ko siya matagal na) dahil ang galing niya talaga pati yung mga actors na…
