Bloggers and the Principalia

Recent events in the Pinoy Blogosphere has led Alex Maximo to explore the similarities of the so-called "blogging elite" in the Pinoy blogosphere and the principalia of the Philippines during the Spanish colonization. Juned, however, begged to differ. Juned notes that the perceived similarities between the principali and the "blogging elite" does not exist merely between the "elite" and the principalia but throughout the blogging community in general and the principalia. I think Alex presents a valid observation, one that Juned has promptly and adequately debunked.

Maria "Ria" A. Jose is a Filipina

When new acquaintances and friends see me, they often think that I am Chinese, or have Chinese blood. This is because I have tsinita eyes, and a relatively lighter skin complexion. Some even assume I attended a Chinese school, or have a Chinese family name. Though I do have some drops of Chinese blood running through my veins, Maria "Ria" A. Jose is a Filipina. My name alone is sooo Filipina already. Most Filipinas have "Maria" as their first or second name. I have Filipina cousins who are named Maria Carmela Theresa, Maria Lourdes, and Maria Christina. Amazingly, all my maternal aunts and my mother have Maria as their first names: Maria Concepcion, Maria Teresa, Maria Loreto, and Maria Milagros. Even the ultimate symbol, the epitome of the Filipinas' conservative virtues is named Maria Clara. But unlike other Filipinas, I have Maria as my ONLY given name. Most people know me as "Ria," which sounds foreign. Then again, Ria was created by dropping the first syllable of Maria. When I was a toddler, some of my paternal cousins called me "Ia Girl". In high school, some of my friends called me "Ma". They were too lazy to say my very…

Sequel Juan Luna Boys

Clockwise from left: Shad, Toti, Papi, Gibb, Aiwem Been hanging out at another cafe with other people lately. So when some of the Sequel Juan Luna (SJL) boys started making tampo that I haven't been to SJL, I started feeling guilty. So on the eve of my cousin Luan's birthday, we played there. We went back again the next day. I hang out with the boys playing and drinking until early morning. Yesterday, I went back to watch their match game, and to hang out with them while they had a drinking session. I realized... nakaka-miss rin pala yung mga mokong na yun!!! The Usual Suspects Meet Jun Asis

Dominic, Ria, Blogie, Andrew, and Jun Asis Last night, the Usual Suspects met up with Jun Asis of Magandang Balita. Jun was in Davao City for some work-related stuff. Kuya Andrew and I were the first ones at Spro Coffee Shop (the coffee shopp with its own blog). We saw Jun happily availing of the free WiFi. Hehe... Then, Jun arrived, followed by Dominic, and Blogie. We played a quick (but annoying) round of Uno. I almost lost but didn't. Jun A lost. HAHA! Sorry Jun, I hate losing. That's me in the picture frowning because Jun won when it could have been me. :( Dominic also brought his World of Warcraft Card Game Set which made me jealous... very, very jealous. I want to have a set for the sake of having one. HAHA! Also at Spro was Ayeza of Bisaya Bloggers, whom I met for the very first time. But it was a brief encounter as she was with other people that time. Kuya Andrew and I had to leave early though as we had to go to yet another family thing.
