Do you enjoy reading and writing stories? I do. As do most Filipinos. If you are looking for a new way to enjoy fiction, a new app TypeKita is here. During the TypeKita Launch event, the app and its various features and exciting opportunities for readers and writers were introduced.
Enjoying Fiction
I rediscovered my love for fiction during the pandemic due to the variety and abundance of fanfiction readily available and easy to digest online. Pre-pandemic, I was struggling to reignite my love fore fiction and for reading but I never quite had the right mindset for it. But I was happy to discover that fanfiction and short-form fiction actually gave me the enjoyment I was looking for.
Although, I never really considered myself a creative writer, moreso a fiction writer, exposure to fiction encouraged me to explore creative writing.

Furthermore, it was really eye-opening to be exposed to different cultures, backgrounds, and lifestyles through the stories I read. Plus, the people I met through the KPop fanfiction community really helped me to be more open-minded.
So when I heard about the TypeKita Launch, I got excited.
Introducing TypeKita
During the launch, the team behind the app shared that TypeKita aims to empower young Filipino storytellers.
The app is a localized version of the Thai original Joylada. It is powered by the homegrown social entertainment platform Kumu. Through this partnership, TypeKita hopes to contribute to the growing online fiction community.
TypeKita rewards the creativity of its storytellers with accessible and self-determined monetization. Meanwhile, readers get to enjoy an interactive and visually stimulating reading experience. The app hopes to inspire and encourage diversity in reading materials.
Safe Space for Creativity
Head of Growth Ysabel Yuzon emphasizes that the app hopes to “open doors even for those who may not have considered writing before.”
“We have always been on the lookout for talent of all kinds, and TypeKita is the space we’re dedicating to the written word. We believe creative people always find their way to each other, but this is where we can also help people find the creativity within themselves, bolstered by a safe community. Both Kumu and TypeKita share a similar moderator system to keep things appropriate and any hate out of the picture.”
Rexy Dorado, Kumu President and Co-founder.
During the launch, the TypeKita Team asserts that safety doesn’t mean stifled storytelling. TypeKita offers an easy-to-use and read chat-fiction format. This easily incorporates popular SNS format fiction into a digital novel experience. Both creation and consumption are much more accessible.
With this easy access to the creation and consumption of fiction, TypeKita hopes to provide a gateway to long-form fiction in the future.
Features
Already, TypeKita showcases the best of Filipino storytelling. The majority of its featured stories are written by talented Filipino writers.
TypeKita also boasts an intuitive and user-friendly chat editor. Creating chatbox narratives are much easier for writers. And it gives readers an immersive experience that allows readers to be part of the conversation. The apps also features shareable stories that let you instantly connect and share your experience via social media, email, or messaging apps.
TypeKita has a wide range of genres at the readers’ disposal on the app. Beyond stereotypical romance stories, current app users gravitate to diverse romance stories. LGBTQ+ themes are in many works. Also popular romance themes and genres are young adult and coming-of-age stories.
Fantasy and mystery fiction are also popular with both creators and readers.
Monetization
Many of its best features are free. But the app provides opportunities for writers to earn. TypeKita has monetization features available for creators.
Readers may directly support creators they like via virtual gifts. Creators may receive and enjoy gifts from their readers. Secondly, creators can also read comments, reviews, and other forms of appreciation from their readers.
Both creators and readers are able to safely communicate and interact with each other.
Growing the Creative Community
Through TypeKita, Kumu hopes to help grow the creative writing community.
During the event, there were live readings of popular TypeKita works. Featured were Babalik Sa’yo by Rej Martinez, The Day I Said Goodbye by Miyuki Jeishi, and Hush, Lucas by Arki Aaron. Rising stars Nour Hooshmand, Ian Pangilinan, and Benedix Ramos brought to life all the ups and downs of romance in fiction.
Finally, singing champion and Silver Badger Featured Live Kumu Streamer Kathleen Anne wrapped up the program with contemporary classic love songs. She also performed her own single, Nagkulang.
I’m On TypeKita
I have downloaded the app. A few works are already on my reading list. And yes, I have started writing a few stories, as well.
Read my first work on the app. It’s entitled The Boring Girl. It may or may not be based on real-life events.
And do not forget to follow me on TypeKita, as well: queenpolar.
So a TypeKIta review is coming really soon.
